As a family law attorney, who handles child custody and divorce matters, I know the potentially devastating effects a divorce can have on not only the parents but the children. When you choose mediation to resolve matters like child custody and property division, it gives both spouses a high level of control in the outcomes, something that is missing in litigation. While mediation is certainly more cost-effective financially, many couples find this increased level of control and the preservation of the co-parenting relationship if children are involved to be the biggest gain.

Mediation isn’t just for amicable divorces where spouses are already in agreement. Often the cases that often benefit the most from mediation, are relationships with higher levels of conflict, because those cases if taken to litigation, are the most devastating emotionally and financially. Mediation only requires that both spouses are open to pursuing an alternative and are willing to be open and transparent.
